Nigerian international and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi was placed in a medically induced coma following an emergency operation for a severe abdominal injury, Mail Sport has reported.

The 27-year-old forward underwent a complex and high-risk surgical procedure earlier this week, after sustaining the injury during Nottingham Forest’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City. Awoniyi had collided with the goalpost during the match but continued to play before eventually being taken off.

Following the surgery, he was admitted to intensive care and placed in a coma to aid his recovery. His condition was described as critical, sparking concern among fans and teammates alike.

Awoniyi is a key figure for the Super Eagles and his health scare has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian football community. He remains under close medical observation, with his family by his side as he begins his recovery.
