Somalia: Uncertainty Surrounds Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s Potential 2026 Candidacy

Will Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud step down at the end of his term? The question remains unanswered, according to Africanews.

Reelected in 2022 for a second term, he could legally seek a third one, as the Somali Constitution does not impose any term limits. For now, the suspense lingers.

In a recent interview with a Kenyan media outlet, he outlined several criteria that will guide his decision, including the establishment of a genuine democratic system and the elimination of threats posed by Al-Shabaab, before even considering a potential 2026 bid.

Since the fall of the authoritarian regime in 1991, his government has been the first to gain international recognition and secure billions of dollars in aid. However, the security situation remains precarious.

It is worth recalling that on March 18, a violent explosion targeted his presidential convoy. Although Hassan Sheikh Mohamud emerged unscathed, several civilian casualties were reported.
