Niger: motorcycle traffic banned in Dosso region amid rising insecurity

The Nigerien government has announced a ban on motorcycle traffic across the entire Dosso region in the country’s west, following a sharp uptick in armed attacks.

The measure, issued on Wednesday by Minister of the Interior and Public Security Mohamed Toumba, applies specifically to areas such as Dogonkiria, Dioundiou, and localities along the border with Nigeria. Authorities say the decision comes in response to a significant deterioration in the region’s security environment.

In recent months, Dosso has witnessed a surge in violence attributed to armed groups. Just this past Sunday, a deadly ambush—reportedly carried out by terrorist elements—left around ten Nigerien soldiers dead and several others injured, according to national radio reports. Defense forces say they were able to neutralize several of the attackers during the counter-offensive.

The motorcycle ban is part of broader efforts by the government to curb the mobility of insurgents and restore stability in this strategically vital region.
