King Charles III and Queen Camilla hosted their first garden party of the 2025 season on the lush lawns of Buckingham Palace, welcoming some 8,000 guests from civil society, the royal court, and public services. The event, steeped in tradition, marked the arrival of spring and coincided with the week of Victory in Europe Day commemorations.
Just five days after Prince Harry’s explosive BBC interview, the royal couple chose grace over confrontation. Dressed in a black top hat and a silk Christian Dior gown respectively, the king and queen mingled warmly with guests, seemingly unfazed by the recent media storm.
Surrounded by senior royals—including Princess Anne, Prince Edward, Duchess Sophie of Edinburgh, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester—the monarchs led the reception with poise and diplomacy. Carefully choreographed “lanes” through the gardens allowed guests the chance to meet members of the royal family during the walkabouts.
Despite the personal nature of Harry’s recent statements, the mood at Buckingham remained composed and ceremonial, showcasing the British monarchy’s commitment to tradition and continuity.
A packed social season ahead
This garden party kicks off a busy spring for the royals. Two more receptions are scheduled at Buckingham Palace: one focused on education on May 14 with 7,000 guests, and another on May 20. The season will conclude on July 1 at Holyroodhouse Palace in Edinburgh. In addition, Duchess Birgitte of Gloucester will preside over the Not Forgotten Association’s annual gathering on May 16.
If ever there was a sign that the monarchy is staying its course, this garden party is it. For now, tea, pastries, and royal smiles are the crown’s only response to the Sussex controversy.
