Guinea: junta sets elections for December 2025

Under pressure from the international community and in a bid to restore its economic credibility, Guinea’s ruling junta has announced a new political transition timeline. Presidential and legislative elections are scheduled for December 2025, to be preceded by a constitutional referendum on September 21 of the same year.

The announcement was made on Monday, May 12, by Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah during the Africa CEO Forum in Abidjan. The proposed timeline aims to reassure international partners and investors, as the country remains under military rule following the September 2021 coup.

Since the ousting of former president Alpha Condé, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya has led the transitional government. He had initially pledged a return to constitutional order within two years. However, earlier deadlines—such as the one set for late 2024—have not been met. The constitutional referendum is now being presented as a necessary step ahead of the planned elections.
