Pope Francis will be laid to rest this Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, following a solemn funeral attended by thousands of faithful and delegations from around the world.
The Holy Father, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88, received a final tribute from the international community during a ceremony presided over by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, held on Friday in St. Peter’s Square.
The funeral Mass, also led by the Dean, will follow the protocol reserved for emeritus popes, marking an unprecedented event. The legacy of Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio—particularly his commitment to the poor, interfaith dialogue, and the fight against climate change—will remain deeply etched in memory.
The first Jesuit pope and the first South American pontiff, Francis was elected on March 13, 2013. The College of Cardinals will soon convene in conclave to elect his successor as head of the Catholic Church.
The Vatican has announced that a global period of mourning, known as the novendiales, will be observed over the next nine days, in accordance with tradition.
