The death toll from recent attacks allegedly carried out by armed herders in Benue State, central Nigeria, has risen to 72, local authorities reported on Monday.
Initially, officials had confirmed 56 deaths following the violence, which took place on April 17 and 18 across several communities in the Ukum administrative area.
The updated toll increased as local security forces and civilian volunteers continued search operations in the surrounding bush, said government spokesperson Isaac Uzaan.
Nigeria has been grappling for several months with a surge in attacks by armed groups. The country is also dealing with recurring cases of cattle rustling and widespread banditry.
