Mauritania: Presidential Election Date Finally Revealed

Mauritania officially announced that the first round of the presidential election will be held on June 29, 2024, a date now etched into the national political calendar.

Mauritania has officially announced the critical dates for its highly anticipated presidential election. According to a recently issued presidential decree, Mauritanian citizens are called to the polls for the first round of the presidential election on June 29, 2024. Should a runoff be necessary, it will take place on July 14, 2024.

Campaigns for the various candidates will kick off at midnight on June 14 and will end at midnight on June 27. Voting centers will open their doors from 07:00 AM to 07:00 PM, allowing voters to exercise their franchise.

Many believe that the current President, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, who has led the country since 2019, is the favorite in this electoral race, particularly following the strong majority secured by his party in the legislative elections, with 107 out of the 176 seats at stake.

At this stage, eight opposition figures have expressed their intention to enter the 2024 presidential race. During a recent press conference, representatives of the party of the previous president, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, explicitly voiced their support for his candidacy, claiming he represents the ideal choice to “lift the country from its current situation.”

Similarly, Biram Dah Abeid, who finished in second place in the previous election, has expressed his ambition to once again run for the country’s highest office in the next presidential election.
